Your JUVÉDERM® Appointment, Step by Step
- Consultation and facial assessment. Dr. Claustro reviews your health history, medications, allergies, and any prior injectable treatments. She examines your face at rest and in motion, discusses what specifically bothers you, and explains what filler can and cannot change.
- Your treatment plan. You will know which formulas are recommended, which areas will be treated, roughly how much product is involved, and what it will cost before anything begins.
- Preparation. The skin is cleansed and a topical numbing agent is applied if you want one. The lidocaine already in the gel handles most of the rest.
- Injection. Product is placed in small, controlled increments, with the results assessed as she works. Most appointments run about 15 to 45 minutes depending on how many areas are treated.
- Immediate review. You will see your result in the mirror before you leave, keeping in mind that some early swelling is normal and settling takes a little time.
- Follow-up. A brief check-in confirms everything settled evenly, and small refinements can be made if needed.
Recovery, Aftercare, and What to Expect
Most people return to normal activity the same day. Common and temporary effects include mild swelling, tenderness, redness at injection points, and sometimes bruising. Lips tend to swell more than other areas and often look fuller than the final result for the first two or three days.
For the first 24 hours:
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, hot yoga, and prolonged sun or heat exposure
- Avoid alcohol, which increases bruising
- Do not massage or press on the treated area unless specifically instructed to
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated
For the first week:
- Hold off on facial treatments, microdermabrasion, and dental cleanings involving significant lip retraction
- Use sunscreen consistently
- Expect the result to keep refining as swelling resolves
Filler generally settles into its final appearance within about two weeks. Judge your outcome then, not on day two.
Is JUVÉDERM® Right for You?
Good candidates are generally healthy adults bothered by facial volume loss, static lines, or lip and contour concerns, who want a nonsurgical option and hold realistic expectations about what an injectable can accomplish.
JUVÉDERM® is typically postponed or avoided if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or to lidocaine
- Have a history of severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis
- Have an active skin infection, cold sore outbreak, or inflammation at the treatment site
- Are on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, which requires review first
- Are looking for the kind of lifting a surgical procedure provides

One practical advantage of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they are not permanent and they are adjustable. If a result is not what you wanted, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve the product.
